Make Sure You Know How To Make Use Of Your Baby Monitor

Thursday August 6, 2009

There is no doubting the valuable nature of a baby monitor. It enables you to keep an eye on your baby as they sleep, without having to go and check them every five minutes.

While all countries are slightly different in the advice they give to new parents, you can always find a news item or announcement online about how to make sure your baby sleeps well each night. One recent example was from a website in southern Indiana, which enabled readers to check they were doing everything correctly.

Baby monitors help you to be alerted quickly if anything is wrong or the baby wakes up or is unsettled. But there was one interesting piece of advice on this particular website that some new parents doubtless don’t necessarily think about.

It didnt concern the actual use of the monitor – it concerned where you should put it. It should be on a flat surface where there is no danger of it tipping off and falling on the baby. As such, any slippery surface or even a place where it could be reached by an older child or a toddler if you have one, should be avoided. Only the parent should be able to reach it.

It does need to be close enough for you to be able to hear any noise your baby makes. But getting the optimum distance can be achieved by reading through any instructions that come with your unit. You might need to re-arrange the room slightly to make sure you can place it in just the right place to meet your needs.

The other thing you need to think about is whether or not the child can reach it from their cot. This doesn’t apply to babies of course, but they will reach an age where they are able to stand up in their cot and reach out for things. And if they are able to reach the baby monitor they could end up pulling it down on themselves. You might well hear this happen, but by then it would be too late to prevent a possible injury.

The same applies to any cords or wires which may be plugged into the baby monitor. This might depend on the type of baby monitor you have, but do make sure that anything which might be trailing isn’t going to be reachable from inside the cot. And of course the other danger is that you might go into the room in the dark and trip over it!

The main rule here is to always use a baby monitor, but to make sure you do so in a safe and secure way. If you can do that then you shouldn’t have any problems with it at all.

There are lots of different types of monitor out there as well, but whichever one you go for you should have no worries with it as soon as it is properly set up.
